The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom: Overview
Tears of the Kingdom has a different storyline from Breath of the Wild. We can see Demon King destroys everything in the Breath of the Wild. But we don’t know what happens after that. Basically, Tears of the Kingdom is the aftermath of Ganondorf’s attack.
The storyline will be easy to understand if you have played Breath of the Wild. But don’t worry we will explain the storyline of Tears of the Kingdom.
Nintendo Switch Roms thankfully released Breath of the Wild which gained immense popularity. The visuals and background were perfect and the reason for the popularity.
The director, Hidemaro Fujibayashi, and the Producer, Eiji Aonuma, included downloadable features (DLC) in the Tears of the Kingdom. We were very thankful because we didn’t have to pay for those things.
We also loved the environmental storytelling and invested in the new and old characters.
Tears of The Kingdom: Storyline
Tears of the Kingdom is the story that takes us way after the events of Breath of the Wild. It was the time when Ganon destroyed everything. In the first scene, you will see the destruction of Hyrule and how it slowly builds from the scars of Ganon’s threat. But don’t be so relieved, because another creature is waiting for you!
We find a new threat While we try to figure out what is happening. It’s a creeping, corrupting force called Gloom. Gloom is something we can’t describe as a human or an animal. Rather, it’s something else, maybe a nightmare. It comes from the Demon King’s hand whenever it smells fear.
We already knew Zelda and Link from Breath of the Wild, two brave teens fighting the demons to protect their land. The game takes us to Zelda’s timeline, where Gloom starts to roam around. Gloom then make everyone fall sick.
Naturally, Link and Zelda thought something suspicious was happening. They don’t sit around and try to find out by investing everything around the Hyrule. They didn’t know that the Gloom was under the Hyrule.
Later, we see Zelda and Link enter a cavern beneath the castle. Well, guess what! They both are in trouble, like in every teen movie.
The next scene is where Link and Zelda find a mural. The Mural reveals the history of an ancient battle against the “Demon King.” They went deeper because the Mural was not enough for them.
While investigating, Link and Zelda accidentally awaken a mummy trapped in the cave. The mummy woke up and chose violence.
Finally, the battle of tears in the kingdom begins. The mummy hurts Link’s arm and injures him badly. The mummy also breaks the Master Sword and raises the Hyrule Castle in the sky.
Deeper into the story, you will see how Zelda disappears into thin air. Later, Link finds out it was an artifact that took Zelda. Then we can see a mysterious figure rescues Link during the moment. That’s how the storyline begins.
Link meets several characters throughout the story, but first, he meets the spirit of Mauru. Mauru is a Zonai and the source that gave Link a new arm. This open-world gameplay shows many islands, including Great Sky Island, where Link meets with Mauru.
During the rescue missions of Zelda, Link makes new friends and enemies. Sidon is one of his allies, along with the prince and the eventual king of the Zora. Link finds a lot of strange artifacts and decides to give them to his allies.
A lot happens in the middle of the game. Mostly, they are fights with demons and monsters. Link rescues stones and other artifacts from places as rewards. And uses them to defeat the monsters.
Lastly, Link rides the Great Deku Tree from Gloom and gets the Master Sword. He then confronts Ganondorf below the Hyrule castle. Link defeats the army of monsters with his strong allies, and goes into combat with Ganondorf.
His combat with Ganondorf was something that fascinated us. Finally, Link successfully shatters the Demon Dragon’s secret stone with his Master Sword and kills it.
The Last Scene of Tears of the Kingdom was something to remember. After killing every monster in the kingdom, Link finally rescues Zelda. However, the spirits of Raruru and Sonica start to fade away. Because their work was done, and Zelda is finally here.
In the end, Link gets Zelda, and his spirit allies fade into thin air. The whole sages start to vow to protect Hyrule. And Link finally saves the Hyrul from the creepy Gloom.
Tears of The Kingdom: Characters
Tears of the Kingdom has a lot of characters that you can unlock. However, we will discuss the main characters and villains who impacted the plot.
Link
Link is the legendary Hylian hero. He was also in the Breath of the Wild game. Link has scars but he is strong after years of battling. He wrestles with a corrupted arm that gives him power. However, the arm has a risk of consuming him.
Image | Character | Name of the Character | Strength | Weakness | How to Unlock Them |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Link | The Hero of Hyrule | Skilled and genius, Swordsman is adaptable, respectful, and can utilize Impa and Sky Tribe’s technology. | A corrupted arm has a risk of consuming him, and is prone to be tired after any battle. | Starts as playable immediately. |
Zelda
Zelda is Hyrule’s princess and you can say the main character of the series. Her best and most upgraded part is that she has gained power through newfound time manipulation.
We could see her go past time and manipulate the future. But on a serious note, Zelda’s time-travel and future manipulation powers greatly helped us in the game.
Do you remember the mural where they first learned about the “Demon King?”. So, Zelda travels back, finds out everything about the Demon King’s rise, and returns to the present.
She also learns about ancient sealing magic. With her new power, Zelda can go to the past, return with wisdom, and resolve the present threat.
Image | Character | Name of the Character | Strength | Weakness | How to Unlock Them |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Zelda | The Princess of Hyrule | Wise and insightful time manipulation abilities know ancient sealing magic. | Physically weaker than Link, time travel often drains her energy. | Encountered on the Sky Island. Complete the trials and quests to get tools from Sky Tribe. |
Impa
We loved Impa as a supporting character who impacted the game and entertained us. Impa is a fascinating character, as is the Sheikah elder. She later helps Link with many challenges.
Most of the time, we see how Impa helps Link and Zelda with knowledge and cryptic guidance. Even though most of her role in the past was a mystery, her present role was amazing.
Image | Character | Name of the Character | Strength | Weakness | How to Unlock Them |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Impa | Sheikah Elder | Encountered on the Sky Island. Complete the trials and quests to get tools from SKy Tribe. | Physically fragile and not suited for direct combat. | She plays a supporting role. Not a playable character |
Wind Tribe
Imagine a group of people who loved the wind so much that they built their home in the clouds! That’s the Wind Tribe! They used to live on the ground like everyone else. But they wanted to keep a special kind of wind safe. So they went up in the sky and made a giant tower on a fluffy cloud.
Getting to their cloud house is a bit tricky. You need a magic ride or a feather from a giant bird called a Roc. Once up there, you’ll find the Wind Tribe dancing with the wind. They use the dancing power to help plants grow.
Image | Character | Name of the Character | Strength | Weakness | How to Unlock Them |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Wind Dancer from Wind Tribe | Medli | Agile aerial movement Wind manipulation: gusts, tornadoes, levitation deep connection to nature, Ritualistic mastery. | Agile aerial movement Wind manipulation: gusts, tornadoes, levitation deep connection to nature, Ritualistic mastery. | Progress through The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap. |
Zonai
Zonai is an extinct tribe from Hyrule’s past. It is connected to the original sealing of the Demon King.
Zelda met Zonai in the past and learned their customs and rituals. Zonai’s customs and rituals hold the key to ancient magic, which further helped Link become a hero.
Demon King
Demon King is the main villain of the Tears of the Kingdom. He is the most gruesome character in the Legend of Zelda history.
The Demon King is an ancient entity of pure bad intentions. Even though he was sealed long ago, he tries to break free and destroy Hyrule.
The bad news is that we tried to reveal the Demon King’s proper form. Unfortunately, we did not find any valid form of Demon King. Maybe we will see it in the other versions of The Legend of Zelda.
Image | Character | Name of the Character | Strength | Weakness | How to Unlock Them |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Demon King | An ancient entity of malice | Very powerful and can corrupt others. | Vulnerable to specific ancient sealing magic. The influence of Hyrule can weaken him. | The main antagonist is revealed gradually throughout the story. |
Gloom
As we already said, it’s hard to describe Gloom because of its appearance. It’s like a creepy black, smokey substance from the Demon King. Gloom casually roams in the air and makes everyone ill from his smoke.
Image | Character | Name of the Character | Strength | Weakness | How to Unlock Them |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Gloom | Corruptive substance | Spreads darkness and weakens the living beings. Can possess and twist creatures. | can be purified by sacred flames and ancient Zonai rituals | It is an enemy element and is encountered throughout the game. |
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Gameplay
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is the 2nd part of Breath of the Wild. It offers an expansive, open-world adventure filled with exploration.
The character Link is playable and explores the world to find Zelda. The open world features lush grasslands, scorching deserts, mountains, and floating islands.
The main setting of Hyrule is two new areas: the sky and the land. The sky is littered with floating Islands. The underground depths are a vast area beneath Hyrule.
Link can explore by running or walking, sometimes even climbing. He can ride horseback by using a paraglider as well. The floating island in the sky contains puzzles, treasures, and quests that Link has to solve. Some sky islands also have powerful boss enemies.
The underground depths contain dark, dirty, fungi-infested environments. Link has to go through dark lava underground to get valuable treasures. The presence of Gloom is in the depths, which reduces Link’s heart until he returns to Hyrule’s surface.
Link faces a lot of enemies with refined swordplay, ranged attacks, and powerful special abilities. Link can also use his corrupted arm’s power to deal devastating blows.
The puzzle-solving missions allow players to challenge their minds. Shrine trials and creative challenges are there to entertain each player.
New Zonai devices are used for combat, exploration, or solving puzzles. The player can pick up and move different objects through the device. It can also construct vehicles, buildings, rockets, sleds, and fans.
Five new abilities are added and replace previous abilities from Breath of the Wild. The abilities are Fuse, Ultrahand, Ascend, Autobuild, and Recall.
The developers also took some elements from Breath of the Wild such as Shrines and Korok. Link can find a shrine around the Hyrule. The Shrine will grant the Light of Blessing if he clears the mission. Players can trade Koroks to increase inventory capacity.
New gameplay mechanics have been added to The Sheikah Slate’s Evolution, where Sheikah can manipulate gravity.
Tears of The Kingdom Regions
The Tears of the Kingdom map is familiar with the Breath of the Wild map. However, this time, you will see 15 regions in the game. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has eight main regions that differ from each other. Here are eight main regions of Tears of the Kingdom:
Faron
Faron is a tropical island with palm trees, cute Dondons, and amazing waterfalls. The waterfall flows into the lake Floria. You can see it by standing on the Floria Bridge.
The architecture of the Faron region is mysterious. The region also has dragons and birds to push the storyline. The Spring of Courage lives in the Faron region.
There is a village on the outskirts of Faron that pirates overtook. However, Faron’s overall environment is peaceful and aesthetic.
Akkala
Akkala is a natural formation land that has unusual shapes. It is different than the Faron region and has autumnal-colored trees. Hylian soldiers attempt to stave off guardians in the Akkala region.
Tarrey town is the capital of Akkala which has a diversity of people living there. You can race in the Akkala region easily with Zonial Vehicles’ help.
You can also build and customize your own home in this area through Hudson Construction.
Necluda
Necluda is another beautiful region with amazing scenery. It is the main Hylian settlement in Hyrule and home to Kakariko village. In The Tears of the Kingdom, Chief Paya heads the Kakariko village. He is also working with the Zonai survey team to investigate the Ring Ruins.
Necluda has an amazing environment where you can ride your horse and enjoy a good soundtrack.
Central Hyrule
The journey of Links begins in the Central Hyrule after coming from Sky Island. It is similar to The Breath of the Wild, but everything is ruined. You can’t find any guardinas anywhere near Hyrule but fortunately, the Castle is still there.
Central Hyrule has a key location where Link interacts with the Koroks and the Great Deku Three. Moreover, Central Hyrule is the base of operations for Purah and Robbie, which we later discovered in the game.
Hebra
The Hebra region is a snowy environment where you will find many people called the Rito people. It’s a very beautiful region, giving us Christmas vibes without decoration.
It is based on a mountain where Link can take in the scenery of Hyrule. The region has a rocky formation in the center of a lake. When Lake enters the region, you can hear a soothing, delightful soundtrack that offers a welcome vibe.
Hebra contains various loops that Link has to go through. Kaneli is the Rito Village elder who oversees the flight range. The Hebra region has a history: it stands upon a great Hebra skeleton, a forgotten temple.
Gerudo
Gerudo is southwest of Hyrule, a scorching area in an arid desert environment. Gerudo’s environment is more like the Sahara. It is hot in the daylight and cold at night in Gerudo.
There is an oasis in the Gerudo desert named Kara Kara Bazaar. It is a hotspot for merchants and travelers who come from other regions. people from all around the
the best upgrade was Link could easily walk through the Gerudo regions, which was impossible in Breath of the Wild.
Lanayru
Lanayru is the most beautiful region with stunning waterfalls and glistening lakes. It is filled with water and food.
The Zora people built their domain in the northeast part of the Lanayru. There is a statue called the Fallen Princess Mipha.
The statue of the Fallen princess Mipha guarding Zora’s main water source.
Eldin
Eldin is an interesting region filled with volcanoes and hot rocks all around. Only Goron people can thrive in the Eldin regions, maybe because of their habitat.
Naturally, Eldin is a very dangerous and hot place. But, in the Tears of the Kingdom, we can see the Eldin has cooled down.
Therefore, Link can easily walk there without harming himself. Eldin has a resident dragon named Dinral. It flies and roams around the mountain.

Tears of The Kingdom vs. Breath of the Wild
Tears of the Kingdom vs. Breath of the Wild is a common debate among Zelda lovers. Let’s see which one has better experience:
When it comes to similarities, both games have open-world experiences. It is obvious because Tears of the Kingdom is the sequel to Breath of the Wild. So, we can expect similarities between these two games.
The core gameplay mechanics are similar to those in Breath of the Wild. The puzzle-solving quest and rescue management are similar to those in the sequel. Moreover, we can see the Sheikah Slate technology in both games.
The regions and Hyrule settings also remain the same in both games. Even though we can see some scars in Hyrule because of the prequel disasters,.
However, the story and tone differ from Breath of the Wild. Tears of the Kingdom dive deeper into the darker narrative with a new threat called the Demon King. It is the post-apocalyptic theme of Breath of the Wild.
Tears of The Kingdom takes us to time travel and flashbacks of Breath of the Wild. Zelda can now utilize time travel, which was impossible in the prequel series.
The character evolution also differs from that of The Breath of the Wild. The developers have upgraded The Tears of the Kingdom and added new characters, zones, regions, and missions to make it more entertaining.
Our Overall Experience
We liked the overall settlement of the Tears of the Kingdom. The sound, background, and graphics were fantastic. Throughout the whole game, we enjoyed the quests and missions.
We have to say that some quests were repetitive, which might be boring for some gamers. The story and tone were beautiful and thrilling, which kept us excited throughout the game.
The game mechanics were out of this world, which we also loved. The story has a deeper meaning and contains many mysteries that motivate us to play along.
We loved every soundtrack in this game. The sounds were made according to the regions and situations. The visuals and atmosphere were beautiful and aesthetic, which is better than the Breath of the Wild.
What We Liked
- Story and lore exploration
- Enhanced World design
- Refined Gameplay Mechanics
- Engaging Characters and Interactions
what we dislike
